VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Our government has been pushing for closer ties with China in recent years, but a new survey indicates not everybody’s on board with that.
Business leaders and the federal government have been trying to sell the benefits of what a closer relationship with China would mean for our country’s economy.
But a poll conducted by Research Co shows 67 per cent people surveyed aren’t so keen working toward that goal.
“We do have a situation where the level of wariness of China is defiantly higher than it was four, five years ago,” says the polling firm’s president, Mario Canseco.
This skepticism extends to Huawei, with 66 per cent of those polled saying they don’t the Chinese tech firm involved in our 5G networks.
“We have saw a lot of investments from Huwaei, a lot of ads, a lot of social media complaints and it hasn’t really moved the needle to make Canadians look at them when it comes to 5G development.”
As for the move to arrest Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou at the request of the U.S., which wants her extradited, 67 percent of those polled support the Canadian government’s handling of the case.
