RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL (NEWS 1130) – Canadian athletes made their country proud on Day 3 of Rio 2016, winning a pair bronze medals. First it was the women’s rugby sevens team, which dominated Great Britain in their third-place match and then it was Kylie Masse reaching the podium in the women’s 100-metre backstroke.
Day 4 could bring about a few more medals as well. Here are a handful of notable Canadians in action and some of the events fans can look forward to watching Tuesday.
Women’s Soccer
Fresh off a 3-1 win over Zimbabwe, Christine Sinclair and company will look to remain unbeaten atop Group F as they face Germany. Canada will be without defender Kadeisha Buchanan. She is suspended for the game due to yellow card accumulation. Canada is currently the No. 10-ranked nation in women’s soccer according to FIFA while Zimbabwe ranks 93rd.
Swimming
Canada has shone in the pool thus far at Rio 2016. Sydney Pickrem has a chance at a medal in the women’s 200-metre individual medley after qualifying for her first Olympic final Monday night. Pickrem, 19, finished with the seventh-fastest qualifying time.
Ashton Baumann, the son of two-time Olympic gold medallist Alex Baumann, looks to follow in his father’s wake as he competes in the men’s 200-metre breaststroke (heats then possibly semifinals). Santo Condorelli, 21, and Yuri Kisil, 20, will compete in the men’s 100-metre freestyle and Audrey Lacroix swims in the women’s 200-metre butterfly.
Women’s Synchronized Diving – 10-metre platform
Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion have high hopes for a medal. This is the third Olympic Games for each athlete. They won bronze together in this event in 2012. Benfeito and Filion are just two members of what’s thought to be a strong Canadian diving team.
Judo
Quebec’s Antoine Valois-Fortier meets France’s Loic Pietri in the men’s 81kg division. Valois-Fortier is one of Canada’s most accomplished judokas and won bronze at London 2012.
Men’s Volleyball
The Canadian men have to deal with a tough Brazilian team, but also the boisterous crowd that will be cheering on the host nation. Canada is hoping to build off the momentum they gained from their upset win over the United States Sunday.
Men’s Field Hockey
Canada aims to avoid a third consecutive loss as they take on a Netherlands team that is 1-0-1.
