Sports can be cynical. The hype is almost always greater than the reality. But sometimes a kid comes along with a legendary pedigree, oodles of skill, charisma and a balance of veteran poise, raw talent and….we all forget about the many times we’ve been burned before.
This past weekend baseball fans met Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Finally. After a year of wondering when it would happen, the franchise saviour arrived in Toronto. And the extremely forgettable 2019 Blue Jays suddenly have a reason for fans to dream. What is it about this kid, in particular, that made the entire baseball world turn its eyes to a losing team to watch his debut? Where did he come from and why is everyone so damn sure he’s going to succeed?
