VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Nearly 10 years after a deadly seaplane crash off the coast of Vancouver Island, new safety rules are coming in.
As of next summer, all seaplanes operating in Canada will need to have personal flotation devices for everyone on board.
If the plane has fewer than 10 passengers on it, you’ll have to wear that PFD whenever you’re on or above the water. Higher capacity planes will still have to have devices for everyone on board, but you won’t have to wear them at all times.
Commercial seaplane pilots will also require training on how to leave a craft when it’s under water.
On Wednesday, the federal minister of transportation announced the changes to the Canadian Aviation Regulations.
Six people — including a mother and baby — were killed when a seaplane went down in Lyall Harbour in 2009. The single-engine plane stalled before it went down.
Only two people survived.
