OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – Canada’s prime minister is weighing in on the explosive devices that have been mailed to prominent figures in the U.S. like Bill and Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and most recently Joe Biden and Robert DeNiro.

A suspicious package, later found to be containing a pipe bomb, was also sent to CNN, prompting the evacuation of the Time Warner Center in Manhattan.

While speaking to reporters along side the prime minister of the Netherlands, Justin Trudeau took a moment to address the developing situation south of the border.

“These reports are deeply concerning,” he said. “All citizens deserve to live in peace and security.”

Trudeau says a free press is ‘foundational for any democracy’.

“We must ensure that they can do their important work without fear,” he said. That comment comes after President Donald Trump claimed the media is responsible for the anger behind such acts.

“I want to assure all Canadians that we are monitoring the situation closely, and as always, Canada stands ready to provide assistance to our American friends and allies if need be,” Trudeau added.

The public safety minister says at this point there is no known Canadian connection to the mail bombs, and Canada’s threat level is not being raised. It is currently set at medium.
