VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Are B.C. and Canada ready for legalized recreational marijuana? A new Insights West poll is looking at how people feel about the issue.

With just over a month remaining until the federal Cannabis Act comes into force, it seems there is strong support for legalization in B.C. The poll shows 63 per cent of respondents support legalization, with 30 per cent saying they “strongly” support and 33 per cent “somewhat” support legalization.

But some people have concerns, and impaired driving is at the top of their list.

“Now that we’re down to the wire, what we’ve found is that residents in British Columbia are really split on the state of readiness of both B.C. and Canada,” said Steve Mossop, president of Insights West. “There are concerns, and there is a number of areas where they’re starting to get a little bit leery, so support, overall, has actually dropped a bit.”

Of those surveyed, 77 per cent wonder how legalization will affect their ability to travel to the U.S., and 72 per cent think this could lead to more impaired driving cases.

Cannabis will become legal for recreational use on Oct. 17.
