VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – This may be enough to get you hopping mad.
Knocking one back continues to get more expensive and that’s largely due to tax.
It’s now working out to around $20 in tax on a 24-pack of beer, according to Beer Canada, which is out with a new report comparing how much we pay in tax compared with our American friends.
“Our view on it is that enough is enough,” says Luke Harford, president of that group. “Governments keep increasing the tax here in Canada on beer, and what we’re trying to do is provide Canadians with the information so they can engage in the conversation and say they don’t want any more tax increases on their beer.”
That compares with $4 of tax for Americans to get a 24-pack. “We’ve seen 45 separate tax increases across the provinces since 2010,” explains Harford. “The tax increases have been twice as fast as inflation.”
Harford’s group is calling for government to put a freeze on future tax increases on booze.
Dubbed ‘Axe the Tax,’ earlier this year, his group posted an online petition in hopes of getting more people on board to reduce the tax.
