VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – One year after the inauguration of Donald Trump, and a year and a half since the UK’s controversial Brexit referendum, a new book asks whether Canada could see its own populist revolution.
In the book, “Could It Happen Here, Canada In The Age of Trump and Brexit,” Michael Adams, founding president of polling firm Environics, crunches the numbers to find out whether Canada could elect its own Trump.
Adams points out, in a way, we already did.
“When I say to my American friends, ‘Well, you know, I’m writing a book about Could It Happen Here’ and they all laugh and say, ‘Well, look. You’re from Toronto. You elected Rob Ford. So end of story. Of course it could happen in Canada,'” he explains.
“The case that I’m making is that, while, it does happen here, it is a very much smaller minority of people who would elect a Trump-like character in Canada than is the case in the United States and in many parts of Europe.”
Adams uses thousands of recent social values surveys to argue we are trending toward being a country more open to diversity and less of the attitudes that created the conditions for Trump and Brexit.
