OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS 1130) – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is now suggesting a regime change in Syria following the chemical attack last week that killed dozens of people including many children.
The attack led the US to launch missiles at a Syrian air base, while G7 foreign ministers are meeting today to pressure Russia to end its support for the Bashar Al-Assad regime.
The prime minister is making his strongest statement yet on the crisis in Syria and the future of the Assad regime. “I think there’s no question that the medium and long-term future of a peaceful Syria no longer includes Bashar Al-Assad.”
Justin Trudeau says how they get there in the short-term is a priority, pointing out he’s been speaking with allies like the US, Germany, France and Britain. “Assad and his regime need to be held to account and we need to move as quickly as possible towards peace and stability in Syria that does not involve Bashar Al-Assad.”
The prime minister is also targeting Russia saying countries that have been supportive of the Assad regime bear some responsibility for the chemical attack. Trudeau made the comments while visiting the Second World War site of Juno Beach, where he said the international community not to repeat the “terrible mistakes” of the past.
